New Parish Priest
In the letter that I have written to all parishioners today (14 July) I mentioned that various health issues have obliged me to step down as parish priest on 3 September and move to the ‘reserve bench’. Naturally, this is not what I would have wished. St. John’s is a wonderful parish and I have had enormous support, happiness and friendship during my short time here. Nevertheless, Bishop Richard felt that medical advice should be followed so it will be a quieter life for me beyond September. The good news is that at a time of acute shortage of priests the bishop has agreed to send Fr. Stanislaw Mycek, presently Assistant priest at Bognor, to come to St. John’s as the new parish priest on 3 September. I am sure that you, like me, will keep him in your prayers as he prepares to join the parish. God bless for the week.
Mass with the Sacrament of the Sick – Next Sunday 21 July at 3pm.
Fr. Richard will celebrate a Mass for the Sick with the Sacrament of Healing at 3.00pm on Sunday 21 July. This is a very special moment for anyone who is in any way unwell. Years ago the Sacrament of the Sick was widely known as the ‘Last Rites’. Happily, the sacrament is now more widely celebrated for anyone in need of the Lord’s healing love. When the priest lays his hands on the heads of the sick and anoints their foreheads and hands with the Oil of the Sick, the Lord is truly present, helping and sustaining them just as he did in the Gospels. The Mass will be quite brief and those attending may receive Holy Communion for a second time that day. After Mass there will be a Tea for all who wish to stay for a chat.
Come and join us for a coffee and a chat after the 9.15am Mass on Tuesdays. Around 9.45 am, parishioners come to the hall for an informal get-together. It’s very easy-going and newcomers are made to feel very welcome. We would love to see you there.
