This way to St John's Nursery St John's Nursery School provides a sound start to education for children from the age of 2 ½, working towards the Early Learning Goals in compliance with DfEE guidelines.
Our aim is to develop the full intellectual, social, moral and physical potential of children so that they are prepared to meet the demands of formal school life with confidence. St. John’s is a teaching nursery with small classes that ensure each child receives plenty of individual attention. Each child will be taught pre-literacy and numeracy skills such as phonics, counting, and recognising numbers and letters. In line with many local primary schools, we teach a phonic approach to letter recognition. Manual dexterity and creativity are developed through drawing, painting and handwork. Half-termly ‘theme’ projects enable us to include the first stepping-stones of the Early Learning Goals in our timetable. Social awareness and communication skills are encouraged through group play with sand and water, singing, music and movement, dressing up, percussion band and outdoor activities. In addition to five indoor play rooms, the Nursery also has a large enclosed outdoor play area and, weather permitting, the children will spend some time each day outside. Science can be introduced to small children in many ways and the garden is a valuable resource, as well as being fun. Space for playing The children have opportunities to develop artistic expression too - here are just a few of their paintings:
